A car transporter carrying nine electric vehicles burst into flames yesterday morning during the 7am commuter rush hour. The resulting blaze brought the M5 in Devon to a standstill with the motorway closed both ways as firefighters fought to bring it under control.
“As more and more motorists switch to electric vehicles (EV), more and more EVs are being transported on car transporters like this across the UK’s road network,” states Matt Butcher, sales & marketing manager for Prosol UK.
“It is, therefore, imperative that car transport and automotive companies, as well as the fire services have every item of fire safety equipment at their fingertips ready to tackle any potential EV fire. The Fire Cloak™, with DIN SPEC 91489:2024-11 certification, is a certified fire containment blanket for lithium-ion batteries. It is proven to successfully contain EV fires and mitigate damage to surrounding property, or other vehicles.”
Concludes Matt: “We know, for example, that electric vehicles that have been involved in an accident and lithium-ion batteries that are damaged (or fault) are more predisposed to thermal runaway. As such, we continue to explore ways in which the Fire Cloak™ can be used alongside other fire safety equipment as a fire preventation solution in the car transportation industry and beyond.”
