In the video firefighters from South Metro Fire and Rescue demonstrate how they used an electric vehicle fire blanket like the Fire Cloak™ to protect a nearby EV charging station. Take a look for yourself and see how South Metro handle this EV fire from start to finish with a detailed explanation of all processes involved.
First of all, the fire blanket was deployed to protect the EV charging station. Upon extinguishing the vehicle, the blanket is then used to wrap the car when it is loaded onto the tow truck to be towed away. South Metro Fire perfectly showcase the importance of having a fire blanket available, and the many ways it can be used on scene and after the event.
Explains Matt Butcher, sales and marketing manager for Prosol UK: “We know that up to 25% of EV fires occur at the point of, or within an hour of, charging the vehicle. As such, it is imperative that charging points are equipped with fire blankets and other professional firefighting tools to quickly and efficiently deal with containing any potential fire and stop it spreading.
Continues Matt: “This very point is expertly highlighted by South Metro Fire and Rescue with the great use of a fire blanket. Firefighters wrap the fire blanket around the EV charging point itself when they arrive on the scene to prevent it from igniting.
“They then go on to demonstrate another key form of containment that can be adopted by towing professionals, recovery operators, logistics & fleet managers, car dealerships, body shops and more. By using the blanket to actually cover the damaged electric vehicle on the tow truck, both the truck AND the driver are now protected for the duration of the journey to the recovery yard or repair workshop. By covering the vehicle in this way, the risk of the vehicle re-igniting, something that can happen at any time with an EV fire, is mitigated.”
Concludes Matt: “Whether you’re a regional fire service, a recovery operator or accident repair workshop, please make sure you are prepared for an EV fire by adding the Fire Cloak™ to your portfolio.”
