Following on from our recent post about an EV fire blanket being used to wrap around an EV charging station to protect it from an EV fire, we wanted to highlight how important the actual location of EV charging stations is from a fire safety perspective.

In Gongju City, South Korea the province is promoting a support project for ‘Relocating Electric Charging Facilities from Underground to Aboveground’ with a view to eliminating the risk of fires occurring at EV charging stations in underground car parks.

Comments Matt Butcher, sales and marketing manager at Prosol UK: “This project aims to outline the benefits of relocating EV charging facilities from underground to aboveground spaces so that, in the event of an EV fire, it can be suppressed quickly and tackled effectively in a far safer environment.”

Continues Matt: “Public anxiety towards EV fires in apparently increasing and we all have a responsibility to provide the safest charging infrastructure environment as we possibly can. Insisting that EV charging points are only located above ground in car parking facilities is one way this can be achieved.

“Likewise, the inclusion of specialist fire suppression blankets, such as the Fire Cloak™, is another key consideration for car park operators to further enhance the safety of drivers and members of the public when it comes to EV fire safety.”

Concludes Matt: “Ventilation and access are absolutely imperative to successfully fighting an EV fire and both are, of course, vastly improved if a car park is located above ground. Increased ventilation facilitated by an ‘open air’ environment improves heat dissipation and having an EV fire blanket stored next to the EV charging station is an unrivalled first response to any suspected EV fire.”
